I mean...Armada*?

Kinja'd!!!

The new Armada is the old Patrol (y62) which is a very good, very tough and very attractive (imo) 8 seater built in Japan to be a direct competitor to the Land Cruiser. I have my own very strong biases towards Toyota (duh) but I’m not above a great alternative, which the Patrol/Armada legitimately is. Given that the new Armada is going to be available with cloth seats (!) and actual options the pricing should be in much less need of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! than with the Land Cruiser and more in line with competitors like the Sequoia, Tahoe and Expedition. Granted I know that I lot of you aren’t in the market for 3 tons of anything but say you did need more than 5 seats, and have a good reason to tow more than 5000 lbs and you wanted something that could handle more than a dirt road. What would you choose, and why?

A few notes:

For pricing, the “S” will likely start in the mid 40's for 4x2 and go up to high 60's low 70's for platinum trim.

No rear locker option (off-road traction management standard)

No HBMC (Hydraulic Body Motion Control)

All 4x4 models are full time with automatic front axle engagement (ramping clutches that can vary between fully unlocked to fully locked) and locked clutches in low range.

Skid plates standard as well as the “off road” shock package.

built in Japan except the engine which is built in Tennessee

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

A few more pictures

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

*Frankly I think that calling it an Armada is dumb since the old Armada was originally tacked onto the pathfinder name then dropped and since its sold so poorly anyway. This is like Subaru keeping the “Tribeca” name for its next large crossover despite the fact that its a really dumb name for a Subaru and doesn’t have many positive associations. Whats wrong with abandoning a bad model name with little brand presence? 10/10 would rebadge as a patrol.

I love the Land Cruiser, and if it weren’t my money I’d probably pick it, but if it were my money I’d go for the Armada Platinum. And I’d happily take either one over the hideous QXwhatevernumberwe’reon.

aint happenin’. They can’t even stick the cummins in the regular non-xd titan coming out because its only emissions compliant as an HD model.

I like that generation of sequoia for everything aside from the dash. It was big without being huge (unlike the 2nd get), had great clearance, and had a roll down rear window (personal favorite). I just really hated the column shifter and dash.

well 4wd is an option but not low range(all 4wd get low range). Besides, I see this as clearly more a sequoia competitor than a land cruiser competitor. That it will go off road is incidental. That it CAN go offroad with a little work is nice. I mean, it would take less work and it would work better to turn this into a trail rig than a sequoia or tahoe.

I was speaking of the LR4 and not the Disco Sport, it has an option for a single speed transfer case which is just silly.

It would take less to turn into a trail rig, but why would you? It’s a massive vehicle and there are so many better options out there. When I was working of the State surveying beach erosion we had a Tahoe and it was terrible on the beach. I can’t see anyone wanting a trail rig looking at that and going “yeah I think that pig would be great on the trails”.

Oh man, the single speed T-case option on the LR4 pisses me off to no end...but...I understand that its the only 7 seat “school run” suv they had so it only made sense.

As for the Tahoe...they just suck offroad...for reals. But yeah, the Patrol is a big boy, in my best overland vehicle in america bit it was the size cutoff.

That it only made it part way up Top of the World is telling, since its not THAT tough, but probably tougher than the old Titan based truck could probably muster. I mean a 3rd gen 4runner with spacer lift and 31 inch tires (and no locker) did it...just.

I think it’s great. I think your pricing is a little high though.

If money were no object, I vote ‘Cruiser, but if we’re talking, say $20 difference, I’d have no problem with the Parmada. No lockers, but ARB (and probably others) already have a full catalog of parts that should bolt right up, air-lockers included.

It might be a little high. I looked at Nissan.au and found an SV model equiv is going for about 50 grand converted and used that for my guide...that being said that represents a 12 grand price cut since they are selling so poorly alongside the y61 patrol. You could always swap in a factory e-locker from Australia or the UAE

Well after reading this I finally bothered to answer one of those questions that had popped into my head on the (very) rare occurrence I actually saw one of these. Is it new suspension or is it just the Y61 chassis with a new body?

Well I looked on the Nissan website and that says independent suspension front AND rear, that I did not expect. So they obviously pumped a fair bit of cash into developing this, not sure it is a Patrol as we know it anymore though...

Which is fine really, that’s the way things are now, only the Land Cruiser really still bridges the gap between ‘luxury’ and ‘credible’ off road/overland vehicle. Range Rover can still technically cut it off road, but you would have to be a mad man to overland one.

They just need to fix the engine (or at least it’s reputation) in the Y61 and offer that worldwide as their Defender/70 series competitor. Then it all makes sense!

BTW I priced up the Ti Patrol = AU$76,616
equivalent GXL 200 LC = AU$89,150

Y61 DX = AU$58,585

There is only one good Armada...

Kinja'd!!! Cation > HammerheadFistpunch
02/15/2016 at 03:16

Kinja'd!!!0

Just to clarify, the patrol has become the armada, not the other way around. Nissan just threw the patrol badge on the QX/armada chassis and called it a day. They still make the y61's so the legend lives for now.

Kinja'd!!! HammerheadFistpunch > Cation
02/15/2016 at 10:14

Kinja'd!!!0

Untrue, the y62 and armada have never been related until right now with armada badges stuck on a patrol. The old qx56 was a luxed up armada (suv titan pickup) but the current qx80 and y62 patrol aren’t related to that platform at all.

Kinja'd!!! HammerheadFistpunch > Cation

Kinja'd!!!0

Re read your comment and I think I see what you’re saying. You’re just saying that the new model that’s picture above won’t be called the patrol it will be called the Armada. Which is true. I thought you were saying that the patrol / Armada pictured above was originally derived from the Old Armada platform which it isn't

Kinja'd!!! Cation > HammerheadFistpunch
02/15/2016 at 13:37

Your initial impression was correct. While the new y62 chassis isn’t a direct copy of the old JA60(armada/qx56) it’s most definitely influenced by it.

Kinja'd!!! HammerheadFistpunch > Cation
02/15/2016 at 13:42

influenced? Maybe, but they are very different chassis for different buyers.

02/15/2016 at 16:12

How so? Both are body on chassis, have ifs and irs and both have a vk56 V8 (different versions). With that in mind we both know why the independent suspension is there and nissans primary market (soccer moms). That being said the market for the y62 is not the same as the y61. Sales in Australia have shown that.

Even if it had no influence from the previous gen, in my opinion it’s not engineered to appropriately replace the y61.

US market Land cruisers have 1 price and its $83,825 and while pricing hasn’t been announced for this yet I expect it to top out mid to high 60's. You could even get a cloth seat patrol for probably half what a Land Cruiser costs. Given that the Patrol is also built in Japan and has a heritage nearly as prestigious as the Land Cruiser I would guess that its a well build vehicle.
